Website Design Books & ResourcesAJAX Books | CSS Books | PHP/MySQL Books | ASP.NET Books | Ruby on Rails BooksAJAX BooksAsynchronous JavaScript And XML, or its acronym, Ajax (Pronounced A-jax), is a Web development technique for creating interactive Web applications. Ajax has helped usher in a new breed of user-frienldy Websites and helps make Web pages feel more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire Web page does not have to be reloaded each time the user makes a change. Ajax is great because it helps increase a Website's interactivity, speed, and usability. CSS BooksWhere would we be without Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)? It's hard to imagine the Web without them! Using a stylesheet language to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language is paramount in designing great Websites. While the most common application of CSS is to style Websites written in HTML and XHTML, they also can be applied to any kind of XML document, including SVG and XUL. The Web is currently someplace between CSS 1 and CSS 2, while CSS 3 is coming soon. PHP and MySQL BooksPHP, short for the recursive acronym "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor", is an open source and very popular scripted programming language used to build Websites and complex Web applications. MySQL is a multithreaded, multi-user, SQL Database Management System (DBMS) with a huge (and growing) installation base. It, too, is available for free thanks to its makers, MySQL AB, and their willingness to make it available under the GNU General Public License (GPL). PHP and MySQL are a natural fit for eachother, and when combined with the Linux operating system running Apache Web server software, make up the most popular environment on the Web (referred to as "LAMP"). ASP.NET BooksASP.NET is a set of Web development technologies marketed by Microsoft. Programmers can use it to build dynamic Websites, Web applications and XML Web services. It is part of Microsoft's .NET platform and is the successor to Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) technology. Programmers can write ASP.NET code using any of the different programming languages supported by the .NET Framework, usually (proprietary) Visual Basic.NET, JScript .NET, or (standardized) C#, but also including open-source languages such as Perl and Python. Ruby on Rails BooksSomewhat new to the game, Ruby on Rails, often called RoR or just Rails, is an open source Web application framework written in the Ruby programming language that closely follows the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture. It strives for simplicity and allowing Web applications to be developed more easily than other frameworks and without much configuration. It's a hot topic these days and has quite a few interesting applications on the Web. |
